Spring Clean Your Finances - Money Saving Tips for May

Date published: 29th April 2016

This is an ideal time to reflect on how you have progressed with any New Year resolutions to save cash and regain control of your finances.

Do you like a challenge?

How about attempting the “No Spend Challenge”?  When was the last time you went a whole day without spending any money?  Who is the household money saving champion? Can you manage 2 days?

  • Take a travel cup of coffee to work instead of buying an expensive takeaway version.

  • Prepare a packed lunch instead of an overpriced high street meal deal.

  • Use up left over meals hoarding in the freezer for a quick evening meal instead of ordering a takeaway.

Once you try the challenge it can become very competitive. Make a pact with a member of your household, friend or colleague to see who can be the most creative at finding alternatives to spending money.

Don’t forget to let us know how you get on!

Spring Cleaning

Do you have plans to spring clean over the weekend?  Cleaning out the kitchen cupboards and defrosting the freezer is an ideal time to take an inventory of what supplies you already have.  This will help plan a shopping list for what you need rather than what you always buy.

23 tins of chopped tomatoes in the cupboard? Get creative in the kitchen with budget recipes, batch cooking and meal preparation to save time and energy costs.  Stored in your freshly defrosted freezer will save time and fast food temptation over the coming months.

For inspiration, have a look on the internet for budget recipes. Our very own NHS Fife cook well team also have some recommended healthy recipes.

Treat time

If you really would like a treat over the weekend but cannot find anything free, consider your loose change. Check the sofa, the bottom of handbags, all coat pockets or any other hiding place you may have. Collect all your change in a jar - you may be surprised how much there is by the time you check the whole house!
