Rachael’s story: Support from CARF reversed benefits decision

Date published: 21st August 2015

Rachael had physical and mental health problems and had also experienced sexual and domestic violence. She phoned CARF for help when a Work Capability Assessment found she was not entitled to Employment and Support Allowance (ESA).

Our team of trained advisers gave Rachael advice on her right to appeal and information on how CARF could help her. She received further assistance on submitting her appeal at a drop-in advice session where we made an appointment for her to receive specialist support from our Client Representation Unit.

Rachael continued to receive advice, support and reassurance from a CARF adviser by phone which gave her the confidence and encouragement to continue with her appeal. She was interviewed and advised by a specialist adviser who prepared a written submission and gained medical evidence to support Rachael’s appeal. Rachael was supported by CARF to attend her appeal hearing, which was successful.
