Richard’s story: CARF takes the worry out of benefits after a stroke

Date published: 21st August 2015

Richard suffered a stroke at the age of 58. Due to a pre-existing heart condition he couldn’t work, and was living in temporary accommodation.

Richard’s stroke left him both unable to walk without support and unable to see well enough to manage daily life on his own. His benefits were stopped because he was unable to read and act upon a letter sent by the Department for Work and Pensions.

CARF’s Chest, Heart and Stroke team worked with Richard and helped him gain his entitlements:

  • An indefinite award of Disability Living Allowance
  • Incapacity Benefit payments resumed within two weeks of our team getting involved
  • Back payment of Incapacity Benefit worth hundreds of pounds.

Richard now has peace of mind about his financial position – one less thing to worry about.
